Art Gene's
Mission Statement

Art Gene is an independent (Inter)national Collaborative Art Research Facility, Gallery and Agency engaging associate artists and architects from around the world in design led regeneration.

Art Gene's research remit extends across its program of residencies, exhibitions, symposiums and projects focusing on the role and engagement of our artists architects and communities in the regeneration of the social, natural and built environment.

The Art Gene Gallery is our shop window exploring new futures with diverse audiences from some of the most deprived electoral wards in Europe.

We also take our work out into communities delivering events in unusual locations which highlight the unrecognised architectural and natural assets of our environment and promote a sustainable and sensitive engagement with them.

We embrace risk, trust, innovation, collaborative and partnership working.

Art Gene's focus has grown out of in-depth educational consultation within communities, local authorities and regeneration agencies: to the development and delivery of cutting edge environmentally aware artistic and architectural practice with an ear to the ground. We pride ourselves on providing an aspirational ladder between stakeholders:  contextualising local culture on a world stage and bringing high quality contemporary art, design and thought to the regeneration of the social, natural and built environment.

We are currently engaged in the development and delivery of many creatively driven Art and Architectural projects with integrated educational initiatives delivered locally, Regionally and (Inter)nationally.

Art Gene aims to:

  • Develop an internationally significant facility that is conducive to the generation and exchange of ideas, one that genuinely responds to the professional needs of practicing artists and the context, both geographical and social, in which they create.

  • Raise the profile of and to champion contemporary visual art by engaging audiences and creating an environment that promotes dialogue, critical debate and enhanced opportunities for (Inter)nationalism through participation and partnership working.

  • Continue our commitment to research and pushing for artists' engagement in the mechanisms and processes behind an effective forward thinking regeneration of the social, natural and built environment.

  • Art Gene has a keen interest in how art can be integral in peoples' lives and the environment beyond the four walls of the traditional gallery. This philosophy and aspiration underpins the artistic programme and has consistantly informed the work of Stuart Bastik and Maddi Nicholson who lead the company's artistic programme.
