Out of Place

'Out Of Place' showcases photo, video and installation by seven Chinese artists, most of whom are postgraduates from Xiamen University Art College. The exhibition reflects the concerns of these young Chinese artists about the reality in China now. The see the world from different angles: perspectives captured through their personal vision and now articulated in their art works.

The exhibition explores these unique perspectives and experiences, and highlights the sometimes jarring juxtaposition of cultures, events and imagery in a world somehow now 'Out Of Place'.

The exhibition has been made possible through the support of Visiting Arts and British Council.

Round 170

Tang Qiong (China), Round, 170 (diameter) 2008, Textile

"I love those noisy and messy markets full of cheap products. They provide me with all the necessary daily life products and also all the inspirations for my work."

Relocate

Zeng Huanguang (China), Relocate 2008, Inkjet print on Iron Plates

Zeug Huanguang collected many name plates of streets and homes vanished because of old city development and placed them in an exhibition space at Art Gene, along the streets of Barrow, inviting the viewers to make their own associations.

Square

Tang Qiong (China), Square, 160 x 125cm 2008, Textile

Tang Qiong's works show a state of fast development of the Chinese Market economy. Those product labels stitched in a compact mass by her hands appear plentiful, keen but disorderly, which is exactly the real abstract reflection of Chinese reality.
