Artist Statement
I am interested in the practice of dislocating a procedure from an area of knowledge to its employment in art, and then testing its results. An example is Rodízio de obras (Scheduling of works), a work that uses Săo Paulo automobile circulation as the basis for a project of curatorial intervention in art exhibitions.
An aspect that is present in the project and in others developed so far is the search for some instability as the blaster element of the creative process. This characteristic can be found in the procedural, performing and participative character of the work.
Procedural because the project emerges as a proposal or out of a specific situation and develops throughout the research as it contacts other elements and adversities that are incorporated and trace the destiny of the work. Mar Pequeno (Small Sea) is an example of the work serving as a metaphor of its own creation process.
My presence has been constant in the projects developed, adding a performing aspect to the works. Initially due to the sudden onset with the substance or its creation (see Siestawatch, Travelling), followed by the search for an interaction with the substance itself and the context where it is inserted (Mar Pequeno – Small Sea, Delivery), and, further ahead, incorporating a restricted audience which not only intervenes in the development of the work, but also in the creation of the rules that conduct this development (Rodízio de Obras –Scheduling of works, Xadrez combinado - Combined chess and Circuito - Circuit).
This participative character of the work is present both in the planning and development phases of the work. The dialogue and interaction with specialists of technical areas of art or other areas of knowledge have provided expansion beyond anticipated in the beginning stages of projects. More recently, the participation has also occurred with the delegation of authority, allowing the projects to follow their course independently of my constant physical presence.
Temporize and permeation brings new challenges not only because it is to be developed in another country, with another culture and history, other people, situations and places, but also because it is related to another area of knowledge: the economy. Added to this, is the development of a structure of project and planning that needs to be shared with collaborators, including a logistic to manage the budget, staff, locations and projects. Another factor is the possibility of incorporating the story of the development of the work, something that is already informally present in my practice, as part of the work.
